Mindful Me (Sacred Heart Girls College)

In Sacred Hearts Girls College, the Year 9s have a compulsory 2-period lesson where they get to choose their interested topic from 15 given topics. I followed one of my CTs for her "Mindful Me" lesson where she teaches the class on their physical and emotional well-being and maintaining a work-life balance. The students had to choose 5 motivational quotes and paste them in their booklets before they had to think of one motivational quote on their own and decorate their cards. Below are some pictures of the students with their decorated cards (Permission to take their pictures and to post them were given by their teacher and the students themselves).

I find this 2-period lesson very interesting as it allows the students to learn skills that will be beneficial to them even after they leave school. It also allows them to explore topics outside of what is being taught in class. I feel that this is an opportune platform for the teacher to get to know the students better and understand the troubles that they face on a daily basis. For example, exploring their emotional well-being can bring up issues such as bullying which the teacher can address and guide the students in supporting victims of bullying. This concept of teaching definitely reflects the role of the teacher: teaching students instead of just teaching the subject.

  1. Interesting lesson. We have such lessons in some of our local secondary schools too. :)
